U.S. have reached an Intermediate level of language and who are interested in
entering a university degree program.

ELA Admissions Criteria:
No TOEFL test is required to enter the ELA. Students are tested and placed into
the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced level. demonstrate minimum English
language proficiency (USD requires TOEFL iBT score of 80)

ELA/USD Concurrent Enrollment Admissions Criteria:
Students who meet the criteria established by the University of San Diego (USD) may take regular university courses (up to six units) while enrolled at the university. Concurrent enrollment is subject to the approval of the ELA Director and from the director of the department you wish to enter.
USD Admissions Criteria:
ELA can provide conditional acceptance to a USD degree program. Students who need conditional acceptance to obtain a student visa must meet the admissions criteria established by USD.
Students seeking conditional admissions should:
- demonstrate minimum English language proficiency (for example, an acceptable TOEFL score)
- present acceptable scores on any entrance exams required by USD (SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.)
- complete any prerequisite courses for acceptance into a particular major, in addition to language training. These courses can be taken while the student is enrolled in the ELA program.

Certificate of Achievement:
After successfully completing your ELA coursework, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
Program Courses:
The foundations for writing the American essay, a thesis-based approach, will be practiced.
The focus is on learning to hear and produce the rhythms, phrasing, and intonations of Standard American English.
Students will improve their auditory discrimination, comprehension, and oral communication skills.
To prepare students to take the test required by most universities for admission, students will focus on three sets of skills. Each week students will learn new vocabulary words, develop skills in reading comprehension, and study a new grammar point.
Students will become comfortable participating in small and large classroom discussions, as well as practice their skills in giving short, extemporaneous presentations.
Through a variety of readings and activities, students examine American cultural values, including holidays, money, food, and entertainment, and discuss their own cultural values as well.
This course emphasizes reading and writing skills for work required of an entry level university program.
Program Electives:
Students will enjoy taking on different dramatic roles as they read and form short plays to help them become comfortable speaking.
While learning technical vocabulary, students will understand the fundamentals of the American legal system and how legal principles are applied in business transactions and government policy-making.
Learn the common language of American business while studying differences in styles and practices in international business.
Students will develop their techniques for active participation in planning, organizing, and presenting group projects. Students will also improve cross-cultural communication skills.
Use literature from around the world to help students identify genres and to derive meaning/comprehension from literary texts.
The focus is on learning to hear and produce the rhythms, phrasing, and intonations of Standard American English.
