14 Week Intensive English Language Program

Group:
Non-native speakers of English who have reached an Intermediate level of language and who are interested in entering a university degree program.

Class size:
Maximum of 15

Program Costs:
Total Program costs: $4,200 (Fee does not include books, health insurance, housing)
Application fee: $120

Length of Program:
14 week semesters. Semesters begin three times each year: fall, spring, summer.

Weekly hours of instruction:
Minimum of 20

Program Goals:

  • Improve your language skills in reading/writing, listening/speaking
  • Prepare for the TOEFL exam
  • Practice skills required in American university classes

ELA Admissions Criteria:
Students who have successfully completed high school in good academic standing may enter the English Language Academy (ELA). Classes are offered at the Intermediate and Advanced levels. Even if your scores are high, you can still benefit from our skills courses. Before you begin classes, the staff will interview and evaluate your English skills and place you in classes with students who are at your same ability level.

ELA/USD Concurrent Enrollment Admissions Criteria:
Students who meet the criteria established by the University of San Diego (USD) may take regular university courses (up to six units) while enrolled at the university. Concurrent enrollment is subject to the approval of the ELA Director and from the director of the department you wish to enter.

USD Admissions Criteria:
ELA can provide conditional acceptance to a USD degree program. Students who need conditional acceptance to obtain a student visa must meet the admissions criteria established by USD.

Students seeking conditional admissions should:

  • demonstrate minimum English language proficiency (for example, an acceptable TOEFL score)
  • present acceptable scores on any entrance exams required by USD (SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.)
  • complete any prerequisite courses for acceptance into a particular major, in addition to language training. These courses can be taken while the student is enrolled in the ELA program.

Certificate of Achievement:
After successfully completing your ELA coursework, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement.


Program Courses:

Introduction to Academic Writing
The foundations for writing the American essay, a thesis-based approach, will be practiced.

Accent Training
The focus is on learning to hear and produce the rhythms, phrasing, and intonations of Standard American English.

Listening & Speaking
Students will improve their auditory discrimination, comprehension, and oral communication skills.

TOEFL Preparation
To prepare students to take the test required by most universities for admission, students will focus on three sets of skills. Each week students will learn new vocabulary words, develop skills in reading comprehension, and study a new grammar point.

Oral Presentations
Students will become comfortable participating in small and large classroom discussions, as well as practice their skills in giving short, extemporaneous presentations.

American History and Culture
Through a variety of readings and activities, students examine American cultural values, including holidays, money, food, and entertainment, and discuss their own cultural values as well.

Academic Study Skills
This course emphasizes reading and writing skills for work required of an entry level university program.


Program Electives:

Drama for Oral Fluency
Students will enjoy taking on different dramatic roles as they read and form short plays to help them become comfortable speaking.

American Legal English
While learning technical vocabulary, students will understand the fundamentals of the American legal system and how legal principles are applied in business transactions and government policy-making.

Language of American Business
Learn the common language of American business while studying differences in styles and practices in international business.

Oral Presentations for the Business Professional
Students will develop their techniques for active participation in planning, organizing, and presenting group projects.  Students will also improve cross-cultural communication skills.

Introduction to Literature
Use literature from around the world to help students identify genres and to derive meaning/comprehension from literary texts.

Accent Training
The focus is on learning to hear and produce the rhythms, phrasing, and intonations of Standard American English.

Listening & Speaking
Students will improve their auditory discrimination, comprehension, and oral communication skill
