Short-term Summer Intensive English Language Program

Group:
Non-native speakers of English who are at the Intermediate level of learning and who wish to continue practicing their skills during summer vacation.

Class size:
Maximum of 15

Program Costs:
Tuition fee: $3,500 (Fee does not include books, health insurance, housing))
Application fee: $175
Non-refundable deposit: $300 (Due one month prior to program start date)

Length of Program:
Semester begins mid-June and ends the first week in August

Dates of Program:

2010 Summer Semester
Application deadline: May 17, 2010

Orientation and check-in: June 21, 2010
Classes begin: June 21, 2010
Holiday: NA
Classes end: August 6, 2010

Weekly hours of instruction:
18 hours per week

Program Goals:

  • Practice your language skills in reading/writing, listening/speaking
  • Begin studying for the TOEFL exam

Certificate of Achievement:
After successfully completing your ELA coursework, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement

Some courses which may be offered include:

Introduction to Academic Writing
The foundations for writing the American essay, a thesis-based approach, will be practiced.

Accent Training
The focus is on learning to hear and produce the rhythms, phrasing, and intonations of Standard American English.

Listening & Speaking
Students will improve their auditory discrimination, comprehension, and oral communication skills.

TOEFL Preparation
To prepare students to take the test required by most universities for admission, students will focus on three sets of skills. Each week students will learn new vocabulary words, develop skills in reading comprehension, and study a new grammar point.

Oral Presentations
Students will become comfortable participating in small and large classroom discussions, as well as practice their skills in giving short, extemporaneous presentations.

American History and Culture
Through a variety of readings and activities, students examine American cultural values, including holidays, money, food, and entertainment, and discuss their own cultural values as well.

Academic Study Skills
This course emphasizes reading and writing skills for work required of an entry level university program.

Grammar Workshop
Weekly lessons on specific grammar points such as idioms and phrasal verbs.

Housing Options:
On-campus housing is available or participants may arrange their own accommodations.
